Natural gas industry a boon for jobs, report says

June 27, 2017

The magnification of the natural gas industry in the United States has created millions of jobs and has positioned itself for millions more, officials from the American Petroleum Institute said Tuesday.

In releasing a 268-page report entitled “Benefits and Opportunities of Natural Gas Use, Transportation and Production,” the API concludes that the natural gas industry nets economic benefits for states with natural gas reserves, such as Pennsylvania, and those without.

"Natural gas puts Americans to work," Erica Bowman, API chief economist, said, adding that the study found 4 million jobs associated with the natural gas industry in 2015. "That number is expected to rise to 6 million jobs by 2040."

As API officials outlined the benefits that stem from the rise of the natural gas industry, here in Delaware County, some issues remain open. One includes the concerns of a group of six Middletown residents who filed a lawsuit against the Sunoco Mariner 2 pipeline in Delaware County Common Pleas Court. They contend that the pipeline comes closer than 75 feet to a building, which would be in violation of a township code requirement. They also want the lines to be required to be installed in the center of easements and questioned the age of the ordinances under today’s circumstances as the standards were passed more than 50 years ago.
