Officials: Seismic testing using thumper trucks doesn't require DEP permits

June 19, 2013

Seismic testing using vibe trucks - or thumper trucks - does not require a Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection permit, officials said.

"If (Seitel is) using thumper trucks - they don't need blasting permits from us," said DEP spokesman John Poister. "The only aspect of seismic testing that DEP is connected with is the handling, storage and detonation of explosive charges. That is our only connection with seismic testing - we do not otherwise regulate it."

The use of explosion charges are regulated through the DEP’s bureau of mining.
